History

The military airfield at Northolt became operational in 1915 when aircraft of the Royal Flying Corps flew defensive patrols against Zeppelin raids over London. During World War II it was one of the key airfields in the defense of London and an active base for RAF and Polish Air Force squadrons.
Soon after World War II, Northolt became a significant civilian airport, but the airline flights ceased on the opening of the central area at Heathrow in 1954. It then wholly reverted to military use.
Since about 1980 movements of privately civilian aircraft, mainly corporate jets, have outnumbered military aircraft. RAF Northolt is restricted to just 3,500 flights a year (7000 Movements). Therefore access is at a premium.
The oldest building on the Station, the Officers' Mess, was built in 1929 and is still operational.
Recently the remains of the 'Battle of Britain' Ops Room were discovered on the base. It is the last example of its kind and is now being restored as a national heritage building.
